It looks like Mobile SMEStorage that was designed for the Iphone looks great and work on the Sony Ericsson P1 also – if you know of any other mobile platforms this works on then let us know !
Details kindly taken from this blog post.
We’re busy adding some more features to the SMEStorage website, which address the user requests we have been seeing in the last couple of months.
The first is the ability to get a download link for a file from the browser itself. Of course you can already shared a file with other people via the email feature, which allows you to select a file or multiple files, set an expiry date, and send them. We’ve had requests however for an easy way to get file links so that they can be embedded in blogs, etc. To that end we are putting in a new feature that gives you a unique link whenever you click on a file.
We are also continuing to tweak and add features the email backup service. This allows you to backup any email account directly to SMEStorage, whether it is secure or not. A couple of things that had been pointed out to use where timeouts with large Inboxes and the lack of anything visual as the emails are processes. Both of these will be addressed over the next couple of days, and we’ll do a more complete feature on the Email backup service when we have done the tweak.
We have release an Iphone client for SMEStorage. You can access all your files from the Iphone, share files, set expiry dates, use the group collaboration features, all from your phone. It’s also integrated with Zoho office for the Iphone. See the video below for a visual demonstration.
Group features have now been added to SMEStorage that allows you to create groups and then invite users to subscribe to your group. Once you have members for your group you can choose to share files with the group or with individual members of the group. Users you choose to share files with see the files in their shared files folder next time they log in or if they are already log in they can see the files in the shared file folder if they refresh.
You could very easily setup a partner network or business groups.
The feature is very easy to use but a pictorial walk through is always easier ! To that end see below !
We’ve been asked a few times now how we store the data and how safe it is. SMEStorage uses Amazon S3 to store the data you upload.
S3 can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web. It is designed to gives any developer access to the same highly scalable, reliable, fast, inexpensive data storage infrastructure that Amazon uses to run its own global network of web sites. The service aims to maximize benefits of scale and to pass those benefits on to developers.
Of course, not all of us are developers, and our aim is to leverage the Amazon S3 reliable cloud to provide our own API and value added functions / features that you will want from access to your data. That is why we have implemented consumer features such as in-browser MP3 streaming via the Yahoo Media component and also a way to view your photos inline. We’ve also implemented business level features such as file sharing with file expiry. This is very useful if you want to send large files or if your files keep getting blocked by corporate firewalls. We’ve also implemented group sharing and collaboration features in which you can share a file which then appear on the person you shared it with, shared file list. Other features such as email backup from any mailbox are currently being added.
It is features like this that we believe make data storage a ‘service’ and not just a cloud. We also believe channels and access points are important, that is why we are currently building out out Iphone access and mobile access versions. You can already use the service from any web browser and we recently announced the beta of our firefox plug-in. Pretty soon we’ll also have Java desktop version that will work across Mac, PC or Linux.
Of course a question you may ask, if you already have an Amazon S3 account, is can we use our own account for and get these service features ? A fair question, although when we started to build out this service we envisage it as a way that non-technical people could take advantage of a data service without worrying about the technicalities. Having said that, we are are working on enabling you to plug-in your own Amazon keys for a $1 a month access to our service features – keep your eyes peeled, this will be launched pretty soon !
We have been working with Rahul Jonna author of the GSpace Firefox extension. He has used our REST API to add SMEStorage access to his Fireuploader product. You can access a beta here. The final version will be released soon and will be available from a link on the SMEStorage website.
To install just drag the file onto Firefox. You will then see that Fireuploader is accessible from your Firefox tools menu. To login choose SMEStorage and manage accounts and enter your username and password. If your session expires at any point just choose ‘manage accounts’ and the close and you will be re-logged in.
FireUploader provides a very clean and easy way for you to upload and manage files for SMEStorage.
We have added some more features to SMEStorage. If you now click on an image file, MP3 file, or any Microsoft office file, you will be asked if you want to view/edit the file. This means that you can listen to MP3’s inline, and also view pictures inline in the browser. Office files can be opened to view and edit via Zoho.com online office.
We will be adding more features soon, including, the support for groups, so keep checking back.
We are gradually going to be introducing some new beta features to SMEStorage. The first is the ability to play inline MP3’s using the embedded Yahoo Media player. We have currently enabled this for the HTML file browser – Ajax to follow. It seems this has already been picked up on – see the video post to our video sharing site below:
So what else can you expect ? The ability to view pictures inline, the ability to post directl to Flickr, and we are also looking at being able to view documents etc inline. Stay tuned, more soon !by
It will be coming soon but in the meantime have a look at our sneak preview of SMEStorage for the IPhone below:by
