Twitter Authentication updated for file sharing

We have recently made some enhancements to our site and service and one of those was to change the way that we authenticate with Twitter for file sharing and for enabling users to receive direct messages if someone shares a file with them.

Twitter recently announced that they are turning off basic Twitter authentication and that all sites that integrate with Twitter need to use OAuth authentication.
This means that you will need to re-authenticate to use your Twitter account with SMEStorage.
To do this:
1. Log into your SMEStorage Account
2. Choose ‘App Integrations’
3. Choose to sign in with Twitter
4. Authenticate with Twitter and grant access to SMEStorage
5. Choose whether to share file links and received direct messages for files shared
6. Click ‘Save’

That’s it !

Using SME with your Mac. Upload your Cloud Files direct from the Finder

For many of use in the office using Mac’s we’ve yearned for some tighter integration with SMEStorage and the Mac. You can choose to use the Windows explorer via Crossover or WINE with the Mac and it works nicely, and you can also use the Firefox plug-in which also works really well, but having OS level integration is always nice.

Snow Leopard has enhanced the integration of the automator services into the OS which makes it much easier to provide contextual functionality.

Using this method there is now available an add-in for users of SMEStorage to be able to upload their files directly from the Mac to their chosen cloud of choice (and we now support over 10 storage clouds), and after the file has been uploaded a unique link for the file will be copied to the clipboard.

You can view a video below that show this working with Google Docs:

New ‘Public Files’ Sharing feature for SME Cloud Platform

We have introduced a new feature that is currently in beta but that is live on the site. It allows you to set a file / files to be public. Once it has been set to public the files can be accessed from your public url which takes the format: http://www.storagemadeeasy.com/users/.

To set the file to be public just click on the file and then the share file icon (the icon to the very right of the file name). Choose to set the file to public and then click ‘Set’.

SetPublic

Once the file is uploaded if you go to your public files url as described above you will see the shared public files

SharedFiles

You can tell that the file is now public as opposed to just shared with a Group as the box around the file has two red spikes comes from it that designate it as public.

New beta features for SME site

We’re busy adding some more features to the SMEStorage website, which address the user requests we have been seeing in the last couple of months.

The first is the ability to get a download link for a file from the browser itself. Of course you can already shared a file with other people via the email feature, which allows you to select a file or multiple files, set an expiry date, and send them. We’ve had requests however for an easy way to get file links so that they can be embedded in blogs, etc. To that end we are putting in a new feature that gives you a unique link whenever you click on a file.

UniqueLink

We are also continuing to tweak and add features the email backup service. This allows you to backup any email account directly to SMEStorage, whether it is secure or not. A couple of things that had been pointed out to use where timeouts with large Inboxes and the lack of anything visual as the emails are processes. Both of these will be addressed over the next couple of days, and we’ll do a more complete feature on the Email backup service when we have done the tweak.
