Update to SkyDrive Provider to support Microsoft Live Essentials / Live Sync

We’ve updated our SkyDrive Provider to support Windows Live Essentials / Windows Live Sync files. Live Sync files appear as a folder within your “My SkyDrive files” contained within the Virtual Cloud File System on the SMEStorage gateway. This means you can now access your Live Essentials files from Mac and Linux, as well as Android, iPhone/iPad and BlackBerry.

As with accessing the files directly via SkyDrive, the files in this directory are read only and can only be downloaded. Anything in your Live Sync directory is for download only ie. you cannot upload files in this directory via our Gateway.

Zimbra Briefcase now supported as a Cloud Provider via the SME Cloud Gateway Appliance

We’ve just added support for a new Cloud Provider, Zimbra briefcase. Zimbra is a groupware collaboration tools that is now owned by VMWARE.

The Briefcase was a new feature in Zimbra 5.0 and it allows users to upload files to the Zimbra Mail Store and then have access to the files anywhere they can access the Zimbra Mail Client.

In adding the Zimbra briefcase as a supported cloud Zimbra users can now get access to their briefcase from our Windows, Mac or Linux tools in which they have a native cloud drive for files access, and also from the iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry or Android mobile devices.

When signing up, you are able to enter your own Zimbra URL so that this solution should work with any hosted Zimbra server.

Introducing CloudDav: Use WebDav with S3, SkyDrive, Google Docs + more clouds

One of the things we have been working on is enabling WebDav across the SMEStorage Cloud Gateway platform. This would mean that any Cloud Storage Provider we support would then be available to be used via WebDav even if the underlying cloud provider did not support it. We’ve now finished this work and we’ve made this available to be purchased as an add-on from the Cloud Add-On’s page which is available in every users sidebar after login.

This feature is ideal if you use iPhone / iPad and other phone applications that offer WebDav integration but don’t support application such as SkyDrive or Amazon S3. If you use our iSMEStorage Application you can open files into these apps but there has been no way to save them back out to the cloud until now as many apps are silo’d in that they don’t offer you the ability to open the files back into iSMEStorage.

WebDav can also be useful when you are blocked from installing third party software on your OS but still want to access your cloud files. We support the ability to do this on Windows and LInux with our WebDav integration but not the Mac OS. The Mac OS WebDav support is not great and you should use the iSMEStorage Virtual Drive for the Mac if you wish to access your Cloud files from the Mac OS.

Watch the video below to see the popular Office HD app being used with SMEStorage CloudDav to open, edit and save files on Microsoft SkyDrive and Amazon S3.

Accessing SkyDrive from your iPad with iSMEStorage

Despite all the storage services out there, and I include Google Docs, Amazon S3, Box.net, and DropBox, in these, Microsoft SkyDrive takes some beating. For starters you get a whopping 25GB of free storage, and with the recent Office Live integration, you essentially have the ability to create and edit documents.

Just as with Google Docs, we see a lot of business users use SkyDrive as well as individual professionals / consumers. Like the other cloud platforms we support, we add a lot over and above what you get from Microsoft SkyDrive if you use this with the SMEStorage Cloud Platform.

There has not been an App that supported SkyDrive on the iPhone until we released iSMEStorage, and there has not been an App that allowed you to use your 25 GB of file storage on the iPad until we enhanced iSMEStorage to support the iPad. We’ve put together a video demo below so you can see for yourself.

Cisco Smart Storage is a high-speed network attached storage solution that is affordable for SMB’s as well as the Enterprise. Cisco Smart Storage supports WebDav which means you can easily take advantage of the SMEStorage Data Access Platform to access and manage your files.

Cisco SMart Storage supports  WebDAV which means the  the Cisco Smart Storage NAS user will be able to access shared folders from SMEStorage Data Access Clients, such as the Web, Operating Systems, and of course iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry and (soon) Android clients.

To work with Cisco Smart Storage with SMEStorage you first need to enable WebDav support. This can be done from Network Services->Web Server from the Smart Storage config screens.

Next you need to setup WebDav access rights for shared folders. You can do this by choosing Network Shares->Shared Folders and click WebDav Access control in the Action column, and then setup the access rights for the folder.

Now you are ready to configure your Smart Storage to be accessed from SMEStorage. First sign up for a free account and choose the “WebDav compliant storage” package. Once you have registered, log in and you can then enter your Smart Storage WebDav details.

Once completed you can access your SmartStorage anywhere in the world via the web, use sophisticated Windows sync tools to sync files from your desktop, access your storage with rich business and collaboration functionality from your iPhone / iPad and BlackBerry, and have access to much more tools and clients that can be found on our Tools page.
