Mac Cloud Storage Virtual Drive Update

We continue to work on the Mac Virtual Drive. We know that we are a little behind on this as to when we wanted to release it but you have probably seen from many of the recent blog posts that we have been working on a lot of things in Parallel !

We hope to be in a position to release the first beta towards the end of next week on our site, so keep checking back for this. It will be on our labs page.

In the meantime there are some screenshots below to show progress:

Using SME with your Mac. Upload your Cloud Files direct from the Finder

For many of use in the office using Mac’s we’ve yearned for some tighter integration with SMEStorage and the Mac. You can choose to use the Windows explorer via Crossover or WINE with the Mac and it works nicely, and you can also use the Firefox plug-in which also works really well, but having OS level integration is always nice.

Snow Leopard has enhanced the integration of the automator services into the OS which makes it much easier to provide contextual functionality.

Using this method there is now available an add-in for users of SMEStorage to be able to upload their files directly from the Mac to their chosen cloud of choice (and we now support over 10 storage clouds), and after the file has been uploaded a unique link for the file will be copied to the clipboard.

You can view a video below that show this working with Google Docs:

Share your Cloud Storage files using Joomla Components

Recently we pushed out some WordPress plug-ins that enable you to backup your wordpress blog to any of the 10+ storage clouds we support, and a separate plug-in to enable you to share your cloud storage files easily from your blog via file links.

There are now two Joomla components created by Roman Gelembjuk. One mimics the WordPress component which easily enables you to share your Cloud Storage files on your Joomla site, and the second is a rich component that displays a file directory and enables you to easily manage and share files within the directory that are hosted on your choice of cloud storage. Below is an example of this directory. You can see this for yourself here.

Mac & Linux virtual cloud drive due in New Year

We have some really exciting things lined up for the New Year, one of which is the re-launch of the site with a new look and feel, and the other is some fantastic new ways you can use SMEStorage. We are currently mid way through developing out Mac and Linux virtual drives and expect both of them to be available before the end of January.

These virtual drives will map onto your underlying clouds just as the windows version does. This will mean that you can double click into the virtual drive and access up to 10 different storage clouds depending on your package.

A screenshot of the Mac version in use can be seen below:

In the meantime all that remains is to wish you all a happy festive season and thanks for your support over 2009 .

Joomla multi-cloud files sharing Plug-in: Share your cloud files from S3, Cloud Files, Box.net, MobileMe, SkyDrive + more

Similar to the WordPress plug-in we released that enables you to share files stored on various cloud files, we have also now done a similar plug-in for Joomla. The plug-in will enable you to share  your cloud files on your Joomla site.

How does this work ? SMEStorage provides a  gateway in which we sync your file meta-data but all files continue to reside on your storage platform. In this way we are able to offer value added services and clients to your existing storage provider, and provide a single cloud file system which enables you to manage all you files in one file tree.

One of the many value added services we provide is the ability to share files. There are many ways to do this, including RSS, email, Twitter, URL with Private contacts etc, and the Joomla plug-in is now another way.  Also note that files that have been made public, and can therefore be shared on Joomla, can still be encrypted, so you can have private files publically available that you can choose ony to share with your userbase.

To get started, download and install the plug-in, and then register for an account on SMEStorage. Select the account that matches your cloud provider. In the process of setting your account up you will do a file meta-data sync and your files will then be available in the Cloud File Manager. From the File manager you can choose to make the file public. This post steps through how to do just that. Once the file is public you can choose to make it visibile on your Joomla site.

If you want to encrypt your files then upload them via SMEStorage to your cloud provider of choice and choose encryption at the point of upload. Don’t worry if your underlhying cloud provider does not support encryption it does not need to. Remember your password for the file though as we don’t keep it ! Once the file is uploaded to your cloud provider via the SMEStorage cloud gateway you can make it public and it will be available just like any other file.

SME now supports over 10 clouds – Microsoft Live SkyDrive support announced

Today we have added beta support for another storage cloud, Microsoft Live SkyDrive. This now makes over 10 clouds that we support:

Amazon S3, RackSpace CloudFiles, Box.net, MobileMe, FTP-as-a-Cloud, Gmail-as-a-Cloud, Email-as-a-Cloud, WebDav, Google Docs, and Evernote.

Microsoft Live SkyDrive provides support for a whopping 25 GB of Storage. To access it you need a Microsoft Live ID for authentication.

If you use Microsoft LiveSkyDrive via SMEStorage, SkyDrive continues to host your files and SMEStorage syncs the meta information about the file and you are able to access, upload and work with your files  through our variety of clients ,which include an Iphone client, iGoogle, Facebook, Firefox, Windows suite of tools, MS Office Plug-Ins, and Open Office plug-ins.

If you sign-up to our life-time cloud package you get access up to 10 clouds which you can use together and manage your files in a cloud-enabled file system that displays on which cloud your files are stored. Any files or folders that you upload directly from SMEStorage are uploaded directly to your primary cloud provider, which you can change either using My Account->Cloud Providers or via the windows tooling.

Multi-Cloud File Manager released for Open Office

The first independent release of the SMEStorage file Manager is now released and available for download on the OpenOffice.org extension site.

The extension enables you to open and save files directly to/from your primary SMEStorage cloud, be that Amazon S3, Gmail-as-a-Cloud, Email-as-a-Cloud, FTP-as-a-Cloud, Box.net, MobileMe, Mosso CloudFiles, WebDav Cloud, and now MIcrosoft Live SkyDrive also ( next post).

Once installed you will see a new SMEStorage toolbar which you can then use to open and save documents to your cloud of choice.

smestorage

The extension currently works only for OpenOffice on windows but if enough people request it, we will also enable it to work on other OS’s also.

A SMEStorage account is required to use the plug-in.

You can view a video demo of the Plug-In on YouTube.

This plug-in is again based on our Multi-Cloud API.
