SME now supports Google Mail for Cloud Storage

The SMEStorage platform now supports Google Mail for Cloud Storage. What does this mean ? It means that when you establish a Google email account and pair it with SMEStorage you can use the Google email account for file storage and data access via the SMEStorage platform.

All files stored will be able to be used with the SMEStorage Windows File Manager, iPhone, iGoogle, Facebook etc, and can be integrated with Microsoft Office, Open Office, Zoho Office, iPaper, and Picnik for imaging editing etc.

As we provide a consolidation layer and API on top of cloud storage platform, this means you can do some really cool stuff like import your Amazon S3 files to Google, or export your Google emails and files to Amazon S3. As we also support AOL XDrive, you can also import your AOL XDrive files to Google.

Here is how to start:

1. First Establish a Google Account

2. Next Register for a new SMEStorage Account. Make sure that your register for the GMail package. Once you have validated your account, login and enter your Google details. If you have existing emails and file attachments in your account these will be imported. It can be a good idea to start a separate Google Email account for your stored files if you want to use Google email as your cloud storage

3. Next Enter your Google Details.

These details will be checked and then you will have the option to save the details. If you choose to save them they will be encrypted and saved. If you choose not to save them you will have to enter them every time you access your SMEStorage account.

GmailSave

Once you click continue you may have to wait a while if you have a lot of files / email as SMEStorage syncs with GMail. If this is a new GMail account you have just created then this step will be quick.

That’s it ! You can now upload files to Gmail via SMEStorage. All your files will be stored in GMail and accessible also via the GMail platform.

Version 3 of SME Rest API Released

We’ve updated our Rest API to accommodate Public Files. We’ve had quite a few suggestions for the API which are mainly centered around what people want to see on top of Amazon S3. We think this is becoming more important as Amazon S3 is becoming increasingly important as storage place for Cloud data offerings. Essentially our REST API is a layer on top of this that provides business functionality API’s for the data. There are of course other initiatives with providing a file system API for Amazon S3 but we have concentrated more on providing business functionality for stored data which we think will become increasingly important moving forward. This of course will be accessible to all S3 users when we finish the work to open up our platform to any S3 User.

SME Update

Live for SMEStorage as from now is Twitter integration. You can now enter your Twitter details within your information settings and anytime a user shares a file directly with you via the user of Groups you will get an instant SMS message telling you the name of the file shared – how cool is that !

This also works if a file is shared with you on the move from the iPhone version of the application

New beta features for SME site

We’re busy adding some more features to the SMEStorage website, which address the user requests we have been seeing in the last couple of months.

The first is the ability to get a download link for a file from the browser itself. Of course you can already shared a file with other people via the email feature, which allows you to select a file or multiple files, set an expiry date, and send them. We’ve had requests however for an easy way to get file links so that they can be embedded in blogs, etc. To that end we are putting in a new feature that gives you a unique link whenever you click on a file.

We are also continuing to tweak and add features the email backup service. This allows you to backup any email account directly to SMEStorage, whether it is secure or not. A couple of things that had been pointed out to use where timeouts with large Inboxes and the lack of anything visual as the emails are processes. Both of these will be addressed over the next couple of days, and we’ll do a more complete feature on the Email backup service when we have done the tweak.
